Deadly Medicine Part 17 – Into the Light
Sunday, February 14th, 2010Into the Light
Mike stood outside the bedroom window quietly listening to everything around him. He watched her through the thin curtain. The voices were quiet now but he knew they wanted him to kill her. He thought he could show her how wonderful it would be once she understood. He saw her bending over by the wall and wondered what made her laugh. Quietly he turned and started toward the other side of the house.
Jessica stood up and wiped the tears away from her eyes. Ok girl, she thought, it’s time you pulled yourself together. You’re acting like a child afraid of the boogeyman under the bed. There isn’t anyone here but you; know it, believe it. As she reached for the light switch she thought she heard something outside. Oh for crying out loud! There is nothing there! But maybe I should take a look around just to calm my nerves. Yes, just a quick look to settle down.
She went through the house turning on every light she could find, even the little night lights. See, there isn‘t anyone here but you. Yes, it does appear that way but I haven’t looked outside. Outside where it is pitch black, are you sure you want to look out there? I have to or I will never get any sleep tonight. Her father had installed spot lights on a timer all the way around the house a few years before he died. He thought he could use them to scare the deer out of the garden. It hadn’t worked for them but Jessica thought they would be perfect for her use now. The main switch was by the door in the kitchen where Jessica now stood. Just take a deep breath and flip the switch. You know there isn’t anything out there.
She turned on the lights and then screamed. At first she wasn’t sure what she saw just that something was there. Then her heart slowed a little and she realized it was Mike. He was just standing there perfectly naked. It didn’t seem real. She had to be imagining this. Why would he be standing there like that just staring into the house? He looks so normal. His eyes are even the right color. But he is naked, why is he naked? Maybe he is hurt. Are you really going to fall for that? Just a few hours ago you couldn’t get away from him fast enough. Maybe he got hurt trying to find me. Maybe this all just some kind of big mistake. Right, a big mistake. Are you forgetting that he hit you? Forgetting about his eyes and his teeth? Hush, just hush. You don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s all been a big misunderstanding. He came all the way out here to find me and explain.
With a shaking hand she reached out to open the door.
