Deadly Medicine part 6 – Déjà Vu
Déjà Vu
There he stood as normal as he was when she went into the bathroom. He’s waiting for that good bye kiss. She willed herself not to shudder. “You know I really don’t feel well, I think I’m coming down with something. Kiss me on the cheek just in case so I don’t give you something.”
“Maybe you should see the doctor. Geeze, that fall you took before bed last night really left some bruises. Your side must look like you fought a battle.”
“My side?”
“Yeah your side,” he had a puzzled look on his face. “Hey don’t you remember falling on the stairs? ”
“The stairs?” She was starting to feel like a parrot. “Um, no not really.”
“Wow. You must have hit your head harder than we thought. I really think you should see the doctor. I’ll call and see if they can fit you in today then I can take you myself.”
Going to see a doctor seemed like a bad idea. Going to see his doctor with him seemed like the worse idea she had ever heard. “No, no really I’m fine. I swear I’m just tired, probably didn’t get enough sleep with that bad dream and all.”
“I really think you should go.” His eyes had narrowed a little and she could see those little creases he got when he was truly concerned.
“It’s okay, I’m okay really. I promise if I feel the least bit off I will call the doctor. You go ahead and go to work I’ll be fine.”
He looked into her eyes a little longer and then said “Okay but if you feel anything at all you will call right? Do you promise?”
“Yes I promise. Now don’t let me make you late for work”
“I still think you should go see the doctor but I will leave it up to you. Don’t forget I have an appointment with him after work. Hopefully he will have a solution for my sore back.” He said this as he kissed her on the cheek and walked out the door. Meanwhile Jessica had the biggest case of déjà vu in her life.
Well, now what? She sat on the edge of the bed trying to decide what she was going to believe. I know I have never had a dream that felt that real and falling? How could I just forget that I fell on the stairs? And the doctor! He says he hasn’t gone to the doctor for his back yet. She flopped back onto the bed, forgetting how bad her head hurt until it hit. Could I have just hit my head so hard that I don’t remember what really happened? Was all that scary part really just a dream? Is any of that possible? Well it must be I couldn’t really have seen what I thought I saw. He couldn’t really have changed like that and he wouldn’t hurt me I know he wouldn’t. As these thoughts flitted through her mind she felt herself drifting back to sleep.
She could hear the bells ringing somewhere in the distance. Was it church bells? She thought maybe she should try to find them in case it was something important. She ran down the alley thinking the church was right around the corner. But when she got to the corner she couldn’t see the church, she couldn’t see anything but the bells kept ringing, the bells….
Her body jerked and her eyes opened. The phone; the phone was ringing. She rolled toward the phone on the bedside table. She had fallen asleep with her legs over the edge of the bed and now her lower back was stiff. “Hello?”
“Hey Jess it’s me. I’m on my way home from the doctor now. I was just calling to see if you wanted me to pick something up for dinner. How are you feeling?”
“Okay I guess. Yeah I’m kind of hungry. What did the doctor say?”
“Oh he gave me a shot of something. I don’t remember the name of it but it worked right away.”
Jessica felt her stomach lurch and then fall. She wasn’t hungry anymore………………

I hate that feeling… you’ve been there, done that, and no one else around you seems to be experiencing the same thing. So does she lock him out? Take off before he gets home? Next please!
It’s on the way I promise!
