The Monster in the Garage
Mike stood in the back right corner of the service bay trying to hide behind the post of the lift. The lift was only up about a foot, allowing him to hide the bulk of himself behind the car. He could still feel his eyes pulsing as he watched the nosy kid fill up the tank on his car. His skin became tight, the blood beneath burning hot as though the tire on the car had suddenly burst into flames. He clenched and unclenched his fists making sure his skin stayed loose enough to use his hands. His mouth was dry and yet dripping black goo onto his shirt. When the kid turned toward the garage Mike felt the pain of the rest of his body begin the change. He could hear the pulling of his skin as his bones moved into new positions. The squeaking and tearing sound of his body changing shape coming to him through his body rather than his ears.
Bobby finished filling the car and then walked toward the garage. He heard thunder off in the distance, stopped and studied the clouds rolling in wondering when the rain would start. He saw a lightning strike on his side of the mountain and new it would be before night fall.
He walked into the garage and up the side of the left bay toward the soda machine. He had just put his money in when he heard the tool box between the two service bays rattle against the wall. He turned thinking the city guy had walked in but didn’t have enough time to react before the thing was on him. He crashed backward into the soda machine causing the plastic on the front to crack and splinter. He pushed back against the thing attacking him and turned his body to the right. It moved back only an inch or two but it was enough for Bobby to see the thing had bright yellow eyes. It was taller than a man which allowed Bobby to see into its gaping mouth. Its teeth all looked very sharp and some kind of black drool was leaking out. Bobby had continued turning to the right, sticking his left arm between himself and the thing staring back at him. It grabbed his left arm and jerked him back around causing him to lose his footing. Bobby tried to swing his right fist at it as he came around but he was too slow. It caught his right arm and twisted it to the side. He heard the snap of his arm breaking but didn’t feel any pain. Again Bobby tried to turn to the right and run. The thing let go of his left arm and let him fall. He tried to catch himself with his right arm but it just crumbled beneath him and his face hit the floor. The crunch he heard was that of his nose breaking a second before his forehead smashed into the cement floor.
Bobby opened his eyes to see his blood everywhere. His face lay in a puddle of it and he was choking. He tried to sit up but his arm gave out again and his face landed right back in the puddle. He tried again using his left arm and managed to get into a sitting position. He felt lightheaded and there was a ring a darkness circling the vision of both of his swollen eyes. His right arm was covered in blood and there were bones sticking out below his elbow. He was looking at it wondering why he couldn’t feel it when he heard a low growl behind him. His body reacted throwing him forward onto his knees. His left hand hit the floor sliding forward through the blood until he was lying flat again his blood now soaking into his shirt covering his name patch. He tried to push himself back onto his knees but the floor was too slick. He heard the thing growl again and felt his heart stop and then start again beating even faster than before. He pushed against the floor with his feet and pulled with his left hand, looking like an inch worm, trying to get out the door. He was within a foot of escape when the door closed in front of him. The monster had closed the door trapping him inside. Bobby heard it hissing in short bursts and realized it was laughing and the sound was getting closer. He didn’t want to turn around, he didn’t want to look at it but he felt his body moving without his consent. He looked at its feet and then its hands and knew it wasn’t human nor any animal he had ever seen. Bobby looked into its yellow eyes and knew without a doubt that he was going to die. He started to plead and stuck out his left arm in a feeble attempt to defend himself but the thing grabbed onto his arm. It pulled his arm to the left and then the right. Bobby could feel his arm disengaging from his shoulder; could hear the ripping sound of his skin and then he felt everything give way and watched as his arm was thrown across the room. He looked back at the thing and saw it reach out and grab his neck. He thought about nothing but trying to breathe. He tried to struggle but he was out of strength. He thought he heard a bone break and then Bobby didn’t hear or feel anything.
