They Change

Jessica was staring into Mike’s eyes trying to stay calm.  “Jess please believe me, I would never hurt you I swear. Please don’t look so scared.”  She realized Mike was pleading with her but she hadn’t heard a word he had said.

“Mike, your eyes”, she was going to tell him they were yellow; was going to ask what had happened at the doctor’s office, but she didn’t.  She was afraid of what he would do if she told him.  “Go look in the mirror and tell me what you see.”  At least this way I won’t be standing eye to eye with him.

Mike frowned but didn’t say anything as he walked over to the small mirror by the door.  He looked into the mirror and blinked, once, twice, three times.  “Are they, they look like…this can’t be real.”  He looked back at Jessica, his eyes open wide, his mouth opening and closing but not actually speaking.

“Mike, please tell me what happened today.  I don’t understand anything.  Please don’t get mad again just talk to me. Do you feel okay? Maybe we should go to the ER.”  She knew she sounded weak and pleading. 

Mike’s entire body shook as though a giant hand had slapped him. “No, no I feel fine.  We don’t need to go to the emergency room, really.  I’ll just go back to the doctor tomorrow.  He gave me a shot of something for my back.  I don’t remember the name of it but it worked right away. I must be having some kind of reaction to it.  I am pretty tired though.  Do you mind if I just turn in?”

“Of course not, you go on I will be up in a bit.”  She watched as he went up the stairs.  I can’t go up there.  What if whatever happened before happens again while I am asleep.  No, I think I should stay down here.  If he comes looking for me I will just tell him I can’t sleep.  Probably won’t sleep anyway.

When he reached the landing he turned and said “Thank you Jess.  Thank you for believing me.” His voice was so filled with emotion Jessica thought he would start crying again.

“It’s okay, Just get some rest and we’ll go to the doctor tomorrow. ” As soon as she said it she wished she hadn’t.  She thought she heard him snarl. He moved down one step but stopped before he moved any closer. 

“You don’t need to go with me.  I can take care of it myself.” He wasn’t yelling but his voice was shaking with anger. 

Jessica took a step back and stared.  She was trying to decide if she should run out the door when she noticed his eyes were changing again.  She was terrified and fascinated all at the same time. 

They were still yellow but now his pupils were growing and then contracting over and over.  Oh my God!  What’s happening? Run you idiot run now! But she couldn’t get her legs to move. 

Mike started moving back down the stairs toward her.
