Deadly Medicine part 4 – He’s Still Changing

He’s Still Changing

Jessica gasped and took a step back.  He wouldn’t hurt me, he wouldn’t hurt me; run you idiot run; say something, anything just get him talking; no don’t say anything it may only make him angrier; at least move out of the way.  Her mind was a whirr.  Move, don’t move, talk, don’t talk, it was all there but she couldn’t do any one of them.  She held her breath as she watched Mike slowly take one step at a time toward her.  All the while his eyes kept changing; big, small, big, small.

Mike took the last step and stopped.  He stood perfectly still staring at her.  Jessica couldn’t breathe, couldn’t move, and couldn’t talk.  She stood perfectly still, mesmerized by his eyes.

………………………………………………..

Jessica stood looking out the window remembering that day.  The day it all began.  It seemed like it had been months since that day.  She could remember everything very clearly up to the point when he stepped off of the stairs and then it all started to feel like some kind of dream.  “More like an out of body experience”, she said to the empty room.

She remembered staring at him, both of them standing completely still. She remembered watching his eyes and thinking they were changing in time with the beating of his heart, or maybe his breathing.  She remembered thinking she should move but not being able to get her body to obey.  She even remembered that he eventually moved past her to the package that had been delivered earlier.  The package she had to sign for and that she had lied to the delivery man. She could still see Mike’s face as he opened the package, first just determined and then lighting up like a child on Christmas morning.  And then it all started to get a little fuzzy.

…………………………………………………

Mike turned toward her as he started to unpack the box.  He looked at her, his eyes ever changing, and then his lips pulled back into what was maybe supposed to be a smile. What Jessica saw, however, was anything but pleasing.  His skin pulled tight as though he suddenly didn’t have enough to cover his face.  His lips seemed almost blue rather than the reddish pink they had always been. But what scared Jessica the most, the thing that made her start screaming was on the inside.

Mike’s entire mouth was black. His teeth were all narrow and pointed as though someone had come in and filed them into fangs. She could see thick yellow goo near the edges of his lips and the back of his tongue.  He had changed in the time it had taken him to walk from the stairs to the table that held the package.

Jessica couldn’t stop screaming.  She felt as though the ground was slipping beneath her, as though she were falling.  Yes, falling like the rabbit down the hole. This thought seemed to come to her from someplace very far away.  She thought she saw Mike move toward her and then she didn’t see anything.
