Deadly Medicine Part 18 – She’s Just Floating
Sunday, April 4th, 2010She’s Just Floating
As Jessica reached out for the door knob Mike was reaching for the knob on the outside. Her fingers curled around the knob as she felt it move slightly; Mike on the outside was trying to twist it the opposite way. Then he was rattling it and she remembered she had locked the doors. She started to turn the lock when she looked out at Mike again. He was changing. His eyes were yellow and his teeth were growing. She looked down and saw Mike’s skin moving and stretching. She could see something pulsing and racing under his skin; darting and squirming up and down his arm and then his arm started to change. It was growing, getting longer and bulkier. She watched as his chest rose and fell faster and faster and then it started to stretch and change too. She could hear popping sounds that reminded her of the sound of bubble wrap when you pop the bubbles. She stood staring, transfixed on what was happening on the other side of the door. Mike’s arms now almost reached the ground but no longer looked anything like a man’s. The shape of Mike’s middle was changing completely. Under his skin it appeared his chest had split down the middle and his ribs were separating and moving all around to form something that made her think of a knight’s chest plate she had once seen on the Discovery channel.
Her eyes moved back to his face where his skin had darkened and pulled back away from his mouth and nose. It was tight against his skull, stretched to its limit and then beyond. All of his teeth were now long and pointed and Jessica could see every one of them as his skin no longer completely covered his cheeks. She could see muscle and tendon holding his jaw tight. His jaw now extended down past where his neck had once ended, long and round, jutting out like a backward checkmark. His top teeth were longer than the bottom, reaching down to his new jaw line, a few reaching even further. His eyes were sunken and stretched to the sides of his misshapen skull. His head had three large lumps across the top with more of the dark, stretched, skin showing. The rest of his head was covered with thick dark brown hair that looked more like fur to Jessica then the thinning light brown hair tof the he Mike she knew. His nose was gone leaving two holes in the center of his face. That same black goo dripping from his nose and mouth.
He was getting bigger, taller and broader. She heard a tearing sound and looked down toward his legs, watching as the skin tore and shrunk away. His legs were becoming taller and thicker, his knee caps sinking into the muscle and then moving up seemingly on their own. The squirming, darting things were in his legs too. She watched as they raced up to his hip area and then back down toward his feet. Some were now moving back and forth across his feet. His feet were getting longer and wider, his toes were being swallowed by excess flesh. Well he seems to have more than enough skin for his feet. The thought made her giggle and then she heard him.
Her eyes jumped back up to his face. She could hear him whispering her name but his mouth wasn’t moving. “Jess, it’s going to be alright I promise. Just open the door and we will talk about it.” It was his voice but it wasn’t coming from his mouth, she could hear him inside her head. “Jess please, open the door. Let’s discuss what has been happening. We’ll sit down and quietly talk about all of it. I know it must feel like a lot has been happening that I haven’t told you. I promise, open the door and I will tell you everything.”
Jessica felt as though she were floating. His voice soft and calming kept saying he wanted to talk. He wanted to fix whatever had gone wrong. Her head was spinning. Her arms and legs felt light and relaxed, as though gravity no longer affected her. Mike kept talking to her, saying such calm and soothing things. Telling her how much he loved her and wanted her back. She thought if she leaned back just a little her feet would come off the floor and she really would be floating. She felt happy, giddy to the point of euphoria. She wasn’t thinking anymore. She was just floating.
