Escaping the Darkness

Can’t…..can’t…..you can’t let him do this   wake up…move ..get up.  “It’s okay darling just relax and I will be right back.  I’ll just go get that wine for us and we can have a glass while we talk.  It will be good medicine for you I promise.” The monster that was once Mike turned and walked out the door.  Jessica was lying on the bed struggling to get control.  She could feel her mind trying to focus.  She could see her mind moving through the dark places trying to get to the light.  The light was so far away but she could see it through the sheets of heavy plastic hanging down over the doorway. The doorway she needed to get through to get beyond this hazy feeling of being drugged and pulled back down to the darkness.  Although she could hardly piece an entire thought together she knew she had to physically move to help fight off what ever had taken control of her thoughts.

She tried to move her arm first but only managed a slight tick in one finger.  That one tiny move was enough to give her strength to try again and keep trying.

“I’ll be back soon Jess.  Can you still hear me?” She could in fact hear him and the sound of his new scratchy voice in her head made her flinch and one entire leg moved.  Get up, get up, get up, get up, move…move…move….get up….get up  and on it went over and over in her head until his voice came again. “What was that Jessie?  What did you say?  I thought I heard you.  Were you calling for me?  I will be back as fast as I can I am just getting that good medicine that will make you feel all new refreshed.”

The fear that shot through her would have brought her to her feet if her body was moving as it should.  Instead it only caused her heart to pound in her chest and her breathing to catch in her throat.  He can hear me thinking! Shhhhh. She was now using all of her energy to make her body move while trying not to think about anything.  Suddenly her arm jumped up off the bed and almost hit her in the face.  She wanted to scream with joy but stopped that thought before it could really get started.  She moved her other arm and then it was as if she had become unbound, freed to move as she wished.  She sat up and started to swing her legs off the bed when a wall came flying at her out of thin air.  She ducked and lay flat on the bed again.  What was that?  Imagination, that’s all imagination.  She blinked and saw the wall again.  Bare two by fours with tools and shelves hanging between or from them.  It’s the garage.  But how..why…OH NO he must be in the garage.  He knows where I hid that box with medicine vials. She didn’t have to wonder why she could see the garage walls through his eyes.  Of all the things that had happened, that one thing made perfect sense.

She rolled off the bed, landing on her knees and crawled to the door.  It felt very important not to take any chance of being seen through the window.  Once she went through the doorway she stood upright and listened.  Listening for any sound that might tell her where he was at that very moment.  She could hear nothing.  Not a single sound.  Wishing she could hear something to give her an idea of where he was she started walking down the short hall.  Taking very short steps and standing on the tips of her toes to stay as quiet as she could.  She looked around the corner toward the kitchen.  Still nothing.  She got down on her hands and knees again, crawling past the big windows in the living room.  Once she knew she was far enough away from them she stood and tip-toed the rest of the way to the front door and walked out without making a sound.
